When a Kenyan job ad says "send your CV to hr@...", the email is the first thing the employer reads. Many are skimmed in seconds, and some are filtered by subject line before a person sees them. Keep it short, follow the ad exactly, and make one or two real points about you.

The subject line

Use exactly what the ad asks for. If it gives a job title or reference number, put it in, then your name: Application for Cashier – Ref: QM/CSH/09 – Wanjiru Kamau. A wrong subject can mean your email is never opened.

The email in five parts

  1. Greeting: "Dear Hiring Manager," unless the ad names a person.
  2. Which job you're applying for, and where you saw it.
  3. One or two real things you've done that fit this job, with a number if you can.
  4. That your CV is attached, and that you're available for an interview.
  5. "Yours faithfully," then your name, phone and email.

Examples by job

Change every detail to your own. Never copy a number that isn't true for you.

Cashier

Driver

Nurse

Teacher

Office assistant

Attachments

Attach your CV as a PDF named with your name. Only attach certificates or ID copies if the ad asks for them. If it says "one PDF", combine everything into one file.

If they ask for your expected salary

Give a range based on the job and your experience: "My expected salary is between KES 25,000 and 30,000."

Follow up once

If you hear nothing a week after the deadline, reply to your own email with one short, polite follow-up. Once is enough.

Check your CV against all of this in a minute
